Building Your Life on the Right Foundation: 1 Peter 2:4-10

In a world filled with deception and uncertainty, where even videos can be manipulated by AI, there’s comfort in knowing that one day all truth will be revealed. When that day comes, those who have built their lives on Christ will stand unashamed. This foundation is what gives believers confidence in an increasingly chaotic world.

What happens when we reject Christ?

For those who believe in Jesus, there is honor. But what about those who don’t? The Bible tells us that Christ remains the cornerstone regardless of human rejection. People may choose not to believe, but this doesn’t change His position or importance.

When someone rejects Jesus, He becomes a stumbling block rather than a foundation. There’s no neutral ground here – we all must engage with Jesus as either the cornerstone of our lives or as an obstacle we trip over. Eventually, everyone will stand before their Creator, and those who built their lives on Christ will not be put to shame.

Who are we in Christ? Understanding our new identity

When we come to Christ, we become part of a brand new people group. We are called out of our circumstances and devoted to God, carrying His name wherever we go. This new identity is described with three powerful words:

Chosen by God

Even if you’ve experienced rejection throughout your life, God has chosen you. He picked you for His team and made the first move toward restoring relationship with you. This wasn’t based on your performance or worthiness – it was His choice.

Royal priesthood

Not only were you chosen, but you were adopted into God’s royal family. As a believer, you are a child of the King – an adopted son or daughter of God Himself. This royal status means we should live in a way that reflects our Father’s character, bearing His name with honor.

Holy people

You might not feel holy yet – we all still struggle with sin. But God sees us through the holiness of Christ that He placed on our account. We are “positionally holy” now, even if we don’t always act holy. On the other side of this life, we’ll experience the fullness of practical holiness, free from sin’s penalty, power, and presence.

What is our purpose as believers?

God called us out as His own possession for a specific purpose: to proclaim His excellencies. Our job is to talk about how good God is. This connects back to our original design in Genesis 1 – to be image bearers reflecting God’s character in our circles of influence.

Sin broke that image, making us inaccurate reflections of God. But through Christ’s work on the cross, God has restored our ability to be proper image bearers once again. Now we can share from personal experience how good God is to take broken people and restore them.

From darkness to light: The transformation of salvation

Before Christ, we were in complete darkness – blind to the things that really matter in life. Imagine being in pitch blackness with no mental map of your surroundings. That’s how spiritually blind we were.

But God brings us into what Peter calls His “marvelous light.” We can now see and talk about God’s excellencies because we’re no longer in the dark. This transformation gives us a new perspective on everything.

From isolation to connection: Finding our place

The old you lacked connection and mercy. The new you in Christ has:

  1. The potential to be connected – God made room for you in His house as a living stone connected with other believers
  2. Received mercy – God’s wrath is satisfied, and His mercy is extended to you

We’re being built up together as living stones into a spiritual building, with Jesus as the foundation.

How should we live in light of these truths?

Take a moment to assess what truly supports your life and faith today. Not what you say supports it, but what really does. Are you building on Christ or something else?

Seek opportunities to grow individually and together as a church. As your faith extends into your workplace, pray for wisdom when faced with difficult people or overwhelming circumstances. Remember that your purpose is to proclaim God’s excellencies even in the midst of difficulties.

As you navigate public life with its social media and glass-house transparency, reflect Christ in your interactions. When encountering divisive opinions or negativity, respond with grace and understanding. Consider whether your words build people up. Interact with kindness while expressing your faith authentically.

Life Application

This week, carve out time to connect with your foundation – Jesus Christ. Let Him guide your growth and build you up. Make a commitment to be a living stone, following Jesus’ example and staying connected to Him as your foundation.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What am I truly building my life upon? Is it Christ or something else?
  • How can I better reflect God’s character in my difficult relationships this week?
  • In what specific ways can I proclaim God’s excellencies to those around me?
  • Where do I need to receive God’s mercy in my life right now?

Remember that you are chosen, royal, and holy – called to reflect God’s light in a dark world. When you build your life on Christ, you will never be put to shame.
